About Me
My name is Ashmita and I’m an S5 student who’s passionate about studying medicine and becoming a doctor. I greatly admire the hard work and commitment of doctors especially considering the amount of pressure they are under and have always wanted to make a difference to the medical community.
When I first heard about the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund (RMBF), I knew I immediately wanted to fundraise for the charity so that I could help doctors, medical students and their families in need. I really admire the incredible work the RMBF does, in providing financial and mental health support to doctors, medical students and their families, and I wanted to contribute in any way I could.
Why I chose an Own Clothes Day
I arranged an own clothes day in my school to help fundraise as I knew this would be popular with the students and raise a lot of money. It would also be really nice for everyone to dress up, and it would be a refreshing break from seeing the same school uniforms every day.
How I fundraised
I delivered a presentation on the RMBF and the own clothes day I’d arranged in my school assembly to raise awareness of the charity and the non-uniform day. In this presentation, I talked about what the RMBF actually is, the aims of the RMBF, the impact it has had and more.
I think this presentation helped encourage students to take part and donate. I’m really glad I did this as I think it really assisted me in showing my peers how vital the RMBF is as it can make such a huge difference for struggling medical students, doctors and their families and really assist them in their careers.
In addition to the assembly, I also created and put up posters around my school to keep the own clothes day in everyone’s minds. I think this was definitely a really good idea as people were constantly reminded of the day and so ensured that it was less likely that anybody would forget!
What I enjoyed about the day
When the own clothes day arrived, I was very glad to see so many people take part! Everybody loved it and really enjoyed themselves. It was lovely to walk around the school, see all the colourful clothes people were wearing and know it was all for a really good cause! The day ran smoothly as all the money was collected by class teachers in the morning and then transferred to the RMBF.
I especially enjoyed seeing everybody come together to raise money to help those who are struggling. Seeing all my fellow school students of varying ages putting in an effort to make a difference was an inspiring and heartwarming experience!
My advice to aspiring medical students considering fundraising
For any other aspiring medical students who may be wondering about fundraising, my advice is to definitely do it! You can arrange all sorts of events such as bake-sales, walks, non-uniform days, marathons etc. to raise money whilst also ensuring a fun, fulfilling time for everyone who’s taking part.
It’s an incredibly rewarding experience and something I’d encourage people to do as you’re able to help those in need, develop valuable skills and give back to the medical community who work really hard to provide us with healthcare.
Thank you Ashmita, for all your hard work presenting about RMBF to your school to raise awareness, as well as organising the own clothes day. Your fundraising makes a real difference to doctors and medical students who are in desperate need.
