A bit about me
Hello my name is Sophie, I’m currently in year 12 and an aspiring medical student. I was made aware of the RMBF during a virtual medical society meeting on Medic Mentor.
Upon hearing about its cause, I knew it was something I wanted to contribute towards. I’d never organised a fundraiser like this before so I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to try.
Why the RMBF
I wanted to fundraise for the RMBF as it is a charity in support of all doctors throughout all stages of their career. I decided to have the fundraiser take place during the Christmas period as it is associated with a time of giving and doctors give so much to our society that can often be overlooked and needs to be more accredited for.
Charities like the Royal Benevolent Fund are dedicated to giving back altruistically, financially and emotionally to those who are experiencing any struggles as they navigate their medical career.
The event
One of my main aims for this fundraiser was to get others involved. With the help of my classmates, Gloria and Wiktoria, we decided on combining their crochet skills with my baking to create our Christmas Crochet and Cookie sale.
I created posters to promote the sale as well as to spread awareness about the RMBF. I placed a sign of the RMBF logo at the centre of our stall as it was the central cause.
It felt so rewarding baking, decorating and selling a range of Christmas trees, snowmen, candy-canes, stars and stockings knowing each one could contribute to making a small difference.
We sold them within our school and collaboratively managed to raise £251. I enjoyed being able to spread a bit of Christmas cheer and embrace the Christmas spirit throughout the fundraising process.
Why should you consider fundraising?
As stated prior, it was my first time setting up a fundraiser independently so I was slightly worried about how it would turn out. Nevertheless, the RMBF team were incredibly helpful along the way and the event tuned out to be a success.
I would highly encourage taking part especially as it gives you the creativity to combine any hobbies you have with the act of raising money for others.
Thank you Sophie, Gloria and Wiktoria for your hard work and creativity. You are making a real difference to the lives of doctors and medical students.
