Rhian’s Burns Supper

A chance to "raise money and awareness whilst sharing my culture with the community."

About me

Hiya, my name’s Rhian, and I’m a final year medical student at Queen’s University Belfast. I’m from Dunbar in Scotland, although for the last five years I’ve been living across different towns in Northern Ireland for university.3 women, standing together and smiling at the camera. One woman is dressed in kilt.

Why I decided to fundraise for RMBF

I’ve been volunteering with the RMBF for about a year and a half now. I first learned about the charity in my third year, and it really struck me that a lot of my peers didn’t know about the RMBF and the support that they could offer.

As we’ve gone through university, the work that the RMBF does only gets more relevant, especially as we move through the uncertain period of transitioning to working life.

The event

For my last year at QUB, I wanted to organise a fundraising event. Running a Burns Supper allowed me to raise money and awareness for the RMBF whilst also sharing my culture with the community.

I think that Burns is very relevant to the RMBF. He experienced his fair share of difficulties financial and otherwise, and it was his friends who supported him when he needed it most.

What I enjoyed

Men and women sat around round tables and one long table, each eating from a plate of food

The evening was great fun! I’ve never cooked for so many people before, but the food seemed to go down well.

My family came to support the night, and lots of medical students came and performed poems, speeches, dances, and songs.

We even tried to teach a bit of ceilidh dancing and somehow dodged major injuries. We had great support from a local organisation, and in the end, we raised £850!

To anybody wanting to fundraise, I can only say do it! It’s a great opportunity to bring people together. Get inventive and have fun!

Thank you Rhian for all your hard work organising such a creative and fun event! Your fundraising will help doctors and medical students in vital need.
