Watch Roberto’s story
In 2009 Dr Roberto Bilbao was working in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Northampton General Hospital.
Whilst travelling home from work one evening, he was involved in a road traffic accident. He suffered a broken neck and spinal compression, and as a consequence is now tetraplegic.
Roberto’s care needs could not be met in the family home and his wife had to combine visiting her husband, a 160-mile round trip, with caring for their young children and seeking suitable and affordable alternative accommodation.
At a difficult time the RMBF provided support and advice which was not available anywhere else. Their help made a real difference and I will always be extremely grateful.

The RMBF assisted Roberto and his family with childcare costs so that Roberto’s wife could continue to work. We also worked alongside other charities to assist with the cost of moving house and with the cost of adaptations to their new property including ramps and a wet room.
Roberto also has a Motability vehicle and is now able to go out with his family again.
We can only help doctors like Roberto with your support.
